welp... gotta take it back in for warranty repairs. I am having a LOUD whine sound when it starts up cold and the temperature is low outside, lasts for anywhere from 10-120 seconds depending on how cold it is in the morning. I suspect the water pump again (was replaced once) probably no engineering change and I got an identical but new part. Hope it's a revised water pump this time, if that is indeed the problem. I have to take a video if it so there is no hassle when I take it to the dealer for warranty repairs. I need to get it there sooner than later if it's the water pump. I have a feeling no one will take it for at 2 weeks considering it's the holidays.
I hear the same thing on my 3.6,but im not convinced its the water pump.I read about others getting new pumps, only to have the same problem.I think its the pulleys, but waiting for Chrysler to come up with real answer for noise!
Happens when it's on cold start up, literally has to be very cold out, ex. 20 degrees Fahrenheit or less on a start after sitting overnight (in my garage). it is LOUD AS **** not a faint whine. The video I have is when it was about 20 degrees and the whine only lasted a few seconds, but we had a cold snap a few weeks ago with single digits, the whine lasted a good 3-4 minutes.
TourS - I had my pump replaced before because of a faint whine, afterward I had sloshing and they fixed that. The whine came back 10x louder and unfortunately, the sloshing is back now but not as bad as before.
Chrysler is bad for not fixing issues in a timely fashion - like alot of other car companies but doesn't make it "OK", they put the same **** part back in... could be worse, I could need my entire engine replaced like I did with my 11' Maxima.
I'll just keep making them fix it until warranty is up or until they truly resolve the issue.
I've heard stories of independent garages spraying conditioner on the belts and charging for a new water pump even though they never changed it out.
Did you try spraying the belts to see if the noise goes away?
It only has 38K miles on it, I bought it new, the only thing I touch is the air filter, oil filter, washer fluid, tire pressure etc... on that vehicle. Thanks for the suggestion but I'm not going to take much time on trying to diagnose it unless the dealer comes back with a "problem not reproduced" even though I have a video. I have the factory 7 year 100K mile warranty. I will likely trade the vehicle before warranty expires so I am not losing sleep about it.
99% positive it's not the belt, it's a pulley or the water pump again.
My 2013 Limited 3.6 does the same thing. I think it is the power steering pump fluid being too cold. I've had that in a couple vehicles over the years. I wonder if there is a synthetic PS fluid available?
Not the noise we are talking about, its not normal, and Chrysler has a TSB,but their fix doesnt work. There people on the Charger forums also complaining about noise on the 3.6
My advise as a technician is deal with it until further notice. If its the typical whistle ive heard on the wifes 200, and many other 3.6s, its the idler pulley. Ive gone through 3 on the 200 until chrysler came out with a bulletin telling us engineering is aware of the problem and is working on a fix. That bulletin came out in april. So i get to hear it every cold morning when the 200 gets started. A good idea if you are under warranty and this is your issue, take it to the dealer and have it on record so if you go out of warranty and chrysler finally has a fix, you could make a call to customer service and get it warrantied due to the fact that chrysler couldnt fix it at the time you had a warranty.
Good news folks! 1/7 a bulliten was finally released to replace the idler pulley with an updated part number and is suppossed to fix this issue. its only covered under 3yr 36000mi warranty or a service contract depending on which one tho. so if you have it on file at a dealership that you have had this problem when u had a warranty, a call to chrysler customer service should get u some help, they are very good at taking care of customers, the dealer cant just cover it bc the system tells us not covered and chrysler wont pay us for it. So hopefully this helps alot of ppl with this issue, Thanks, anonomys employee of a CJDR dealership

Applies to just about everything with the 3.6 or 3.2 manufactured before September 1, 2014. I have it printed out to take to the dealer on Monday, in fact I am going to contact them now so hopefully they put it on order.
Your link didn't work for me^
I called my dealership about this as I have this issue as well even in my garage. They said they'd need to have the car overnight to hear it first thing in the morning which is kind of a piss off. http://www.wk2jeeps.com/tsb/tsb_wk2_0700215.pdf

TSB's or Technical Service Bulletin's provide useful information to the dealer techs on issues that sometimes cover many different vehicles.
These bulletins are listed according to the section the problem relates to in a group.
This bulletin is a group "7", which is cooling system related. That is why it is not covered under the power train warranty.
Powertrain would be listed in groups - 3 ( rear axle or diff ), 9 ( engine ), 10 ( engine lubrication ), 16 ( prop shafts & u-joints ), 21 ( transmission ).
I "divorced" my dealership and canceled my appointment and will be taking it elsewhere. I am going to write Chrysler about them. I will update when they look at the car and see the video and TSB etc...
OK I have a case open with Chrysler, just to make sure my assumption is correct that they will fix under warranty since I reported the problem before the basic warranty was out. I will know in a few hours the decision, I was assured that they will explore other options to take care of the vehicle if this service manager declines (different dealer than the crappy one I didn't fully complain about).
I would probably would buy from there next time... but it's painful, I don't like to haggle and they are not a no haggle dealer and their advertised prices are kinda high compared to the rest of the area... but I value good service and I would be willing to haggle if need be for my next vehicle, I have to haggle on the trade in anyway so... might as well.
Looks like they are going to a "goodwill" repair on it pending diagnosis - so I risk a "diagnosis" fee if they feel it is a part that has failed because of neglect of maintenance or no fault of Chrysler etc... or if the part causing the problem is a warrantable part and failed prematureley. Guess I will stop by and talk to the service manager and get more clarification. Appointment is the 30th. Hopefully the belt doesn't fall off before then -I drove it to work and it's making noise now just randomly while I drive it. I am going to park it, and am going to skip the tuner for now as I am not a happy camper.
Easy to check. Either get a long screwdriver, long ratchet extension, or a mechanic stethoscope and listen to the idler pulley while the engine is running. Do this when the car emits the noise most frequently, warm or cold. It should make enough noise for you to hear it. The idler's fail on many cars and some replacement belts even come with new idler pulley's in the package.
I suspect the mechanic will just replace the part as listed in the TSB.
I just read the TSB again. It's an easy replacement with warranty time paying either .2 or .3 hours, which is 12 or 18 minutes time. I would look at the area of the pulley and replace that thing myself and not deal with the warranty.
Had an appointment this morning to have the pulley replaced under warranty. The dealer phoned to say they didn't have the part. They will call when the part comes in. I have 49,600 KM on the car, so I hope they call before I go over the 60,000 KM warranty. My friend has the same 2013 Limited, and he was told the repair is $127, because he has 80,000 KM. This is a known defect, and shouldn't be charged, if you have the noise on cold start.
Does anyone know if the serpentine belt is EPDM or Neoprene? EPDM belts should last 160,000 KM. Neoprene don't last past about 80,000 KM.
The salesperson from the dealer where I bought both my 200's called me yesterday in reaction to the nasty note I left them since the service department keeps screwing around with me when it comes to loaners - sometimes I get one, others I don't regardless of if it's a multiple day service or not so I was just fed up. I am expecting a return call and I anticipate they will fix it, but I would wager they don't have the part in stock.
So update... the original dealership came through. They are taking my car Monday afternoon and providing not a rental car like they randomly sometimes do, but instead I am taking a new 200C AWD from new inventory for the duration of however long it takes them to fix the car. They are treating me so well now I almost feel bad, but I was assured when I bought this car that if something happened, the sales guy would talk to service and "take care of it" and I would not have to use extended warranty for a rental, the dealer would pay for it, so - I bought the car, and bought a second one from him a 6 months later for my wife.
I'll post an update after the repair so if anyone else is having the problem...
Just picked it up. No squeaking according to them, I'll know for sure tomorrow morning. They bled the cooling system as well for another issue that came back (sloshing around corners, bubbling sound when shut off).
Felt like I got behind the wheel of 1997 itself after using the 15' 200S AWD for the past 3 days... but my car still drives nearly perfect.
Had mine done under warranty on Thursday, January 29th. Friday morning was about 8 F and there was no squeal on start up. I will try again on a cold morning and see what happens. It used to be really noisy below 0 F.
It was 19F this weekend, it did fine on a cold start no squeaks. Sounded identical to my wife's 200. Mine sounded BAD below 25F as it got worse it would do it in warmer (still cold) temps.
Black Knight > It was -11 F yesterday morning and no squeal. We live just outside Saint John, NB, Canada. Not a really cold place. We have about 9,000 Degree heating days (F) a year. Here, a really cold day will be a low of -20 F. We have lived in places where -40 F was not uncommon. Years ago, we had a Chevrolet Sprint that the timing belt shattered when it was too cold to start the car. GM refused to cover it under warranty, because there was a warning in the owners manual about cold starts. We really like our 2013 200 Limited. We plan on keeping it a long time.
Have a great day.
There would be a squeal here if it was -11 and it would be from ME!
Thanks for the info good to know their fix worked. I like my car too. I plan on keeping mine for at least 2 more years, and my wife's for the same (lease)... then it's time to move on to another Mopar... maybe another 200, maybe a Dodge Charger or 300 AWD.... who knows.
Have a great day too. I hope you are not offended by my dislike of those kind of winter temperatures or anything that I have said about where I guessed you might be from, that certainly was not my intent, i've never been to your location but I am sure it's very nice overall.
