Oil change interval

Somewhere I read that these cars (engine) has a sensor that determines when the oil should be changed and when IT determines it is time the dashboard will read " time to change the oil" or something like that.

Well, today it said it's "time to change the oil" So I checked my records and the Dealer did the first oil change at 5500
today I have 7761 miles.

So, this tells me that Chrysler used a better oil in the Engine from the factory and probably a synthetic oil and the Dealer has used some recycled cheap crap oil the 2nd. time.

By the way the dash light did not come on and tell me the first time, so I could have gone longer than 5500 miles.

I use Mobil 1 synthetic oil in my other engines and that oil lasts over 7,500 miles. What do use guy's use and what weight is recommended?

Thanks for your thoughts,
Jack

Hello, Jack.

We have discussed this subject at the forum several times. You could look at the threads:

I do not believe that is technically possible. Car computer can use some heuristics to estimate next oil change mileage. It could be very simple, like fixed number of miles since your previous oil change (like I had been told at Chrysler service) or more complex, like some people at the forum proposed. It even might be switchable by the service guys. But in any case I do not believe it can take into account real oil quality. So, the most probable, in your case they just forgot to reset oil interval meter at the service. Nothing else.

Dealer has used some recycled cheap crap oil the 2nd
It is possible. I experienced much more dirty tricks they did at the service. But unfortunately you cannot know of it just with your oil change light coming too early.

As "O'Leg" has stated, they probably didn't reset the oil change settings when it was done. I have yet to do the first oil change on my "200", but I have had the service department forget to reset it on some of my previous vehicles, and my wifes as well. I always check it now when I pick up my car, and if it wasn't reset by the service attendant, then I just do it myself before I leave the lot.
