Pentastar tick advice

Greetings. I have an existing 2011 200s with no issues but recently took a test drive of a 2012 3.6l. I have never in person heard the Pentastar tick so I'm curious if this is it or if this is something more. I am trying to evaluate if I want to purchase this vehicle and make the repairs.

Welcome to the forum. Ticking/tapping noises at the top-end may be from valvetrain wear, collapsed lifters (HLA), etc. Since there can be more than one cause, any noise should be diagnosed on a case-by-case basis. I won't say that there is any one 'blanket' cause for engine tick. Many times the cause can seen or felt during diagnosis/disassembly.
HLAs or rockers aren't bad to replace. Camshafts are more expensive, but thankfully, lobe damage is rare.
Use a quality, premium motor motor oil meeting Chrysler MS-6395 (read the label). I prefer synthetics.

Yes that is 100% it. if its a car you are interested in, make them replace the lifters, rocker arms and cam shaft, and get visual proof of the work completed, otherwise walk away from it.
Mine developed the same tick so I examined the entire valve train.

One rocker was loose on its rollers so I replaced just that one only.

I talked to a few who replaced everything and got their old parts back.

Each of them had just one faulty rocker and everything else was perfect.

That was a couple of years back and its still going fine.

Just sharing my experience.

Thanks
Randy

While this is true in some cases, often times the rocker arm has started eating away at the cam lobe, so in that scenario, you cannot replace the cam without replace the the other parts mentioned earlier.
Thanks everybody. I have no issue doing the repair myself on lifters and rockers. Is there a recommended brand? I see a ton of cheap gear on Amazon and elsewhere. I see a whole kit including cams, rockers, lifters and gaskets from China for 906$ Canadian. The engine has 145000km on it.

I would stick with a known brand, doesn't need to be Mopar but a known brand will result in less frustration down the road. The cam is going to be the issue if that is indeed bad. the rest of it will not be to bad to replace.

1 cam is a tolerable expense, 4 is a little much. I have no issue doing the 24 lifters and rockers for preventative maintenance. So ask for 2k off the car and hope for the best?
I agree more with GLHS60. Assess the situation first & then proceed with getting parts.
It may be just one part making the noise.
Use Mopar or at least OEM parts.

The latest & greatest version of the 3.6L roller rocker is Mopar 5184296AH (if this is what the noise is).
It replaces previous versions: 5184296AD, 5184296AE, 5184296AF, 5184296AG.

Good point!!

The rocker has ears that could chew the cam if run too long while clacking.

Mine hadn't chewed the cam but it's important to check it soon as possible.

Mopar had so many up dates on their rockers I bought a Melling part.

Still no clacking problems but its only been about 2 years.

Thanks
Randy
