Oil leak/smell - oil cooler under powertrain?

I have oil under the intake plenum accompanied by the smell of burning oil.

I haven't torn it apart to look to see if it's the oil filter adapter/oil cooler PN: 68105583AF, but I am guessing that is. I'll find out tonight

If this part is cracked and/or leaking (it's not cracked where the cap screws down, that I can see) anyone know if this part is covered under power-train warranty?

I have already priced it and it's not too expensive and not too hard to get to etc..., but if it's under warranty I'll take it in.

Looks like it's not covered, but if anyone can confirm?

https://www.chrysler.com/download/pdf/warranty/2015-Chrysler-Generic-Warranty-1st.pdf

From section 2.4 E

"cylinder block and all internal parts; cylinder head assemblies; timing case, timing chain, timing belt, gears and sprockets; vibration damper; oil pump; water pump and housing; intake and exhaust manifolds; flywheel with starter ring gear; core plugs; valve covers; oil pan; turbocharger housing and internal parts; turbocharger wastegate actuator; supercharger; serpentine belt tensioner; seals and gaskets for listed components only."

I believe I have read about other owners replacing this part, and it wasn't under the powertrain warranty.
It's not an oiled, or internal part ?
I think it is a problem, so naturally I would call and complain, but that a couple bucks might get you a cup of coffee.
Weird, since they just replaced a front wheel bearing on the wife's car and it was warranty.

Good luck.

..maybe I am jumping to conclusions because it isn't that bad, no oil on the ground etc... maybe I or whomever worked on it last spilled oil in the valley from taking out the old oil filter.

The oil level seems to be fine on the dipstick and the level of oil in the valley (spilled or leaked) has gone down (burned off some). I can't quite reach in there and manually dry it up without taking it apart so I will just wait and see. If it were cracked I would think it would have been a complete mess.

From last oil smell STARTED was on the ford and it was though the valve cover gaskets leaking into the spark plug boot.

Give it a thurough clean, first.

Then do the additive and check with black light. (Will have to run for a while to cycle additive though)

I took my car into the dealer yesterday for this same exact problem, it is in fact covered by my powertrain warranty through Chrysler. They ordered the part, and i take it in to the dealer tomorrow for the repair.

I had similar symptoms, my car was leaking oil, and i seen some drops of oil on the ground, also it was kind of smoking from the oil residue.
Initially, i thought the dealer stripped out my oil drain plug, i took the car to them later that day, and they verified it was the oil cooler...so glad it is covered under warranty.

Thanks for letting me know.

Just curious, how many miles did you have on yours when you had that problem?

It was worse last night, oil on the top of the transmission now... and I see oil spots on the cardboard under the car in my garage where I always park the car, it's nearly a quart low so... yep, it's broken. Thanks for the info. I have an appointment scheduled.

While I would be hard pressed to identify a single designed product that was perfect from the start, the Chrysler 3.6 Pentastar engine is pretty good.
It was named "Wards Ten Best Engines" 3 years in a row, and has garnered the same distinction in 2017 as the freshly designed engine for the new Pacifica Hybrid.
Overall, it's a really good engine design.
Of course that is my personal opinion.

UPDATE: Oil Filter Adapter/Oil cooler replaced under 5 year 100K mile powertrain warranty yesterday.

HI here, I have an answer for all of you that are having issues with your 2015 and newer 3.6L Pentastar engine oil leak issues. I know a guy that works for the company that makes thr Oil Filter Adapter for those engines. He says that their research in diagnosing the oil leak issues and working with the Chrysler Quality Engineering Center, they have found that the issue is with the Cap O-ring not sealing. They have foundone that with all of the OFA's that have been returned undamaged, the leaks are from the cap. The BIGGEST ISSUE BY FAR is the use of aftermarket oil filters. The filter isn't the issue, it IS THE CAP O-rings. The oil leaking down the housing makes it look like it is cracked, but the plastic 8s so thick that is can't split. PLEASE USE OIL DYE TO LOCATE THE LEAK. Dope not guess. Please feel free to contact me anytime with questipons.

The problem with mine was not the oil filter cap. I have always used genuine Mopar MO-349 (from memory) filters and changed the O ring every time.

I did replace my oil filter cap with a new OEM one before this happened, I replaced it because the spring plastic device tabs broke off (for lack of a better description). I would bet this is common too. The one I have is a revised version PN 68191350AA, different manufacture - I forget the name (ST something?). I thought I took pictures of the difference but I didn't. Much better design than what came on the car., I would assume the later model 15's or 16+ already has the newer version.

In my case, the problem wasn't the filter housing, it was the oil cooler that was cracked. No leaks or smell since it has been replaced.

My car is an early built 2015, how would I know if the oil filter cap is the new one you mention? Is the part number stamped on it?
I'm thinking of buying it, it's only $12.34 online.

I am, but it does transfer.

I just discovered my oil cooler/housing leaking while I was pulling the upper intake plenum at 101.5 K to change the spark plugs. Unfortunately kid was taking the car back to buffalo the next day so I had to slap it back together. I used my air powered sucker to remove about a half a quart from the valley. I read it can hold 1.5 qts !! Ordered the OE part (generics seem to have terrible reviews) and will tackle it when she comes home for Christmas.
